The Schieffelin Institute of Health Research & Training Centre, formerly known as SLRTC Karigiri, has now been in existence for 50 years. It was started as a facility exclusively for patients suffering from the dreaded scourge of leprosy. Today it is 150 bedded General Hospital, offering general medical care, but with a focus on leprosy. The college offers various courses including Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics , B.Sc Medical Record Science, B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology, B.Sc Physician Assistant, B.Sc Radiography & Imaging Technology, B.Optom , B.Sc. Medical Sociology
A Bachelor's degree in Prosthetic and Orthotics is a four year full-time undergraduate course that includes a six-months mandatory training with three months of prosthetics and three months of orthotics. All the class rooms are well ventilated, lighten, and equipped, furnished according to the Indian Nursing Council norms. All the laboratories are equipped with demonstration beds with built in cupboards, racks, washbasins with running water supply with adequate furniture like tables, chairs, electric fittings etc.
