Today, the church stands as a thriving global community with a membership exceeding 1.6 million, fostering values of faith, education, and social responsibility.
The Palakunnathu family has been instrumental in shaping early leadership within the Marthoma Church, producing several prominent figures, including four major bishops. Recognizing education as a cornerstone of empowerment, the family took proactive steps in establishing schools wherever the church expanded. This emphasis on learning uplifted generations, enabling them to seek opportunities worldwide. The family’s influence extended beyond Kerala to major Indian cities such as Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, as well as to international destinations like Singapore, Malaysia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Arabian Gulf, and Western countries, including the USA, Canada, and Europe.
One of the key figures in this legacy, P.A. Mathew, pursued higher education at Calcutta University before taking up a teaching career in Ceylon. During their travels, he and his wife, Thankamma Mathew, discovered a picturesque hilltop near the Punalur railway station in Kerala. Recognizing its potential, they purchased the land nearly 90 years ago. This scenic location now serves as the campus for Grace International Academy. Their son, P.M. Abraham, a distinguished academician who studied at Madras Christian College, continued the family's educational mission. He went on to teach at Wilson College, Bombay, further strengthening the family's commitment to academic excellence and holistic learning.
Today, Grace International Academy stands as a testament to the enduring vision and dedication of the Palakunnathu family. Managed by the third generation, the institution blends tradition with modern educational methodologies, fostering intellectual growth, character development, and global perspectives.
